 To eat or not eat yam is one of those choice they have to make. Diabetic persons avoid eating yam because of it high content of sugar in it and what it can do to their blood sugar level.

For those of you who love to eat yam, you have another option and it is Water yam.


Water yam ( Dioscorea Alata) also known as Puerto Rico yam. It was first cultivated in Southeast Asia. It is grown in the same quantities as the African yam. Yam is grown in Asia, the Pacific Island, Africa and the West indies. It is second to the white yam. It is important to note that the US yam is called a variety of sweet potato.

The Usefulness of Water yam

Water yam is good for diabetic person because it contains fiber, it also have a substantial amount of antioxidants and vitamin c and helps to suppress blood sugar.
The high fiber content in water yam could be used to manage pile (hemorrhage) and constipation.

The fresh roots of water yam contains good amount of antioxidant and vitamin c. the vitamin c in water yam plays role in anti – ageing, it boost the immune system and wound healing.

Water yam is also rich with minerals like calcium, potassium iron and copper.
The next time you are faced with a decision of what to eat, go to the nearest food market and buy a tuber of water yam and you will be glad you did.
