Do
you love eating carrot? Hmm, I shouldn’t not ask that. The question I should be
asking is what do you know about the carrot you eat?
For
a start we know bunnies like carrot because they are sweet, it comes in type
and different varieties have its seasons. Really but we get to eat them all the
time. Yes we do, and it is seasonal. Carrots are vegetable and like all
vegetables it has a time when it is plant and harvested. Carrots are planted in
early spring and are harvested at late spring and planted again in late summer.
Type of carrots
There
are different types and varieties of carrot for those of us who are used to one
type and one variety of carrot. There are five types of carrot and different
varieties under each type. The five type and their varieties are:
1.
Nantes.
Nantes has three varieties which are; Early Nantes, Nelson and Mokum. It is sweet
flavor and it is crisp in texture and has limited storage potential. This type
and its varieties can grow in loose sandy soil or in bed enriched with organic manure.
Chantaney.
Chantenay has three varieties which
are; Red core, Kuttiger, Kurota. It has conical
roots broad shoulder and round tips. It has sweet flavor good storage
potential. It can grow from summer to fall; it can grow in any kind of soil
especially the ones with rich organic matter content.
Miniature or Baby has three varieties
which are; Thumbelina, Little finger and Parmex. It is round cylindrical or tapered roots, it has
crisp texture and when it is mature it is frequently quite sweet. It grows in
any rich soil that drains well
Imperator
Imperator also has three varieties
which are; Yellowstone, Purple Haze and Sugarsnax. It
is long, has strong tops with stocky shoulders and tapered roots. It has
slightly fibrous texture and stores well. It roots size up well in sandy loam
soil and it roots can become quite larger.
Danvers.
Danvers has three varieties which are:
Danvers, Healthmaster and Danvers half long. It is
thick rooted with cylindrical shape, often with yellowish core. It is used in
making juice and it is used in processing and it stores well. it grows in deep
sandy loam soil.
How to preserve
carrot
If
you want to make sure new carrots stay sweet and crispy, take off the greens
and immerse them in water in a preserved container. Keep the container in the
refrigerator and change the water every 4-5 days.
